Organic veggie farming

Title: Farm General Labourer
Farm: Selva Farm
Location: Beloeil, near Montreal, Quebec

Overview

We are seeking a hard working, reliable seasonal employee on an organic vegetable farm located in Beloeil, QC, very close to Montreal. This position is for a general labourer, who will assist in various tasks throughout the peak growing season. The general labourer will be helping the lead farmer in growing 1 - 1.5 acres of organic vegetables, fruits and herbs. This farm project is in it's first year, so there will be a lot of tasks which have to do with the development of the land such as building raised beds with compost.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the greenhouse seeding, direct seeding, transplanting and maintenance of the crops.
  • Assist with harvesting on the day before or day of farmer's markets.
  • Assist with weeding. (Many hours of weeding using tools and by hand.)
  • Operate farm equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Use hand tools and power tools for various construction, repair, and maintenance tasks.
  • Perform heavy lifting of materials, equipment, or supplies as needed.
  • Follow safety protocols to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Maintain cleanliness of work areas and proper storage of tools and equipment.
  • Willingness to work according to the harvest needs, which may involve working on weekends if there is a Saturday farmer's market for example.

Experience / Requirements

  • Prior experience with small-scale farming, market gardening, landscaping or any sort of manual labour is considered a strong asset.
  • Training will be provided for the right candidate. Lead farmer has 8 years of agricultural experience and a wealth of knowledge to share.
  • Familiarity with machinery, small engines, power tools and hand tools.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks including heavy lifting and prolonged periods of standing, bending and crouching.
  • Able to work long hours of physical labour.
  • A passion for quality food, permaculture, sustainability and community.
  • Strong work ethic with a focus on safety, teamwork, and reliability.

Transport

  • The farm is outside of Montreal. The candidate must have a vehicle, be able to take public transport reliably, or live nearby the farm to apply for this job. Candidates without a reliable method of getting to the farm will not be considered!
  • There is no on-site housing for staff! There is a bathroom, shower, and shady gazebo on the farm, and there is the opportunity to camp out at the farm from time to time if the employee wishes.

Term

  • 5 month contract, at roughly 25 hours per week.
  • Estimated term of May - September.
  • Flexibility on start and end date, possibility of working less hours in spring and fall, and more hours during the peak of summer season.
  • 18$ per hour for candidates with low experience, 19$ an hour for candidates with some more experience.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time, Fixed term contract, Seasonal

Contract length: 5 months
