Position: Social Media Specialist

Date: 12-month contract, starting Monday, June 3, 2024

Oceana Canada is an independent charity committed to rebuilding Canada’s oceans by winning science-based policy victories that increase biodiversity and abundance. We have successfully campaigned to end the shark fin trade, make rebuilding depleted fish populations the law, improve the way fisheries are managed and protect marine habitat. Oceana Canada is part of the largest international advocacy group dedicated solely to ocean conservation. Globally, Oceana has won more than 200 policy victories for marine life and habitats. From stopping bottom trawling in sensitive habitat areas to protecting sea turtles from commercial fishing gear, our victories represent new hope for the world’s oceans.

Oceana Canada is hiring a Social Media Specialist to work with our digital team, supporting the organization’s growth and engagement goals. The Social Media Specialist will be based remotely in Canada, and report to the Communications and Digital Marketing Manager. The position will work closely with communication, campaign, fundraising and science experts to help Oceana Canada win policy victories to protect the ocean. The successful candidate will bring experience to the team in strategy, planning and creating social media content, possess superior communications skills, be creative and knowledgeable in major social media platforms and be committed to helping Oceana Canada achieve its mission and campaign goals. Oceana Canada offers a supportive learning environment, within which the Social Media Specialist will gain experience and knowledge in digital campaigning, analytics and reporting, brand management, supporter cultivation, content planning and strategy as well as ocean and fisheries science and communications.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Share social media content on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn, and identify other social platforms to engage on.
  • Collaborate with communications, campaign, fundraising and science teams to develop content for social media, using creativity to write, source and create assets while maintaining a strong brand voice.
  • Monitor and report on analytics to identify and support ideas, trends and growth patterns. Update monthly tracking documents in support of achieving key performance indicators.
  • Keep up with the latest ocean news in Canada and digital trends to identify content sharing opportunities.
  • Engage with our online community in ways that represent our brand, grow our online supporters and inspire them to care about and help protect the oceans.
  • Contribute to content calendar planning and communications strategies.
  • Provide timely responses to comments, questions and direct messages received on social media platforms using brand guidelines and moderation best practices.

Qualifications

  • 1+ years of experience working with a non-profit or environmental/sustainability organization an asset.
  • Experience in social media management and content creation.
  • Experience with social media management and analytics tools (i.e. Sprout Social).
  • Bonus: Proficiency in graphic design tools (i.e. Adobe Creative Suite or Canva) and video editing software.
  • Bonus: French bilingualism.
